Tree Health, Condition, Safety and Management Reports

Owners of trees have an obligation under UK common and statute law to ensure their trees do not cause reasonably foreseeable damage or harm to other people or property. (see the Useful Links page for further reading on trees and the law).

Having an Arboriculturist's report in place and regularly updated will help to ensure you comply to these legal considerations.

Landowners/ Estate Managers may also commission a tree survey and report to establish what variety of species they have growing on their property, or within the grounds they manage and to assess the physiological & structural health of their tree stock.

The provided report following the tree assessment survey will be a "working document", reviewed periodically (annually for example) to assist with the future planning and management of trees growing around the property or within the estate grounds.

A report of this kind will ensure correct aftercare, for example, ensuring pruning works are not undertaken unnecessarily and performed at the correct time of year for the species concerned.

Tree Sense do not offer contractual tree surgery services, therefore our advice is 100% independent and impartial, so you can rest assured that any tree surgery work recommended is for the benefit of you and your trees.

We are able to put you in touch with local, reliable tree surgery contractors who are Arboricultural Association Approved (AAA) who we trust to undertake our recommendations to the highest standard. Our preferred contractors can be found HERE.

Property Development and Planning Applications

As a Property Developer, Architect, or Private Homeowner planning a development project at sites where trees are growing, as part of your planning application it will be necessary to have an Arboricultural Consultant involved with the planning and design process under The British Standard 5837:2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction - Recommendations.

N.B. This is normally reffered to as an "Arboricultural Impact Assessment" by Local Authorities.

BS 5837:2012 surveys ensure that important and good quality trees can be retained and well protected during the construction phases, right from the initial design and planning phase, through to completion of the development works and post development tree management and aftercare.

See our Development and Planning section for details on our comprehensive Arboricultural Impact Assessment Service.

Public Sector and Commercial Services

Schools, Hospitals and Local Authorities

Trees at schools and hospitals are important for so many reasons. They give visual impact and create pleasant surroundings for us all to be in and enjoy. Children at schools learn about nature, the environment, plants, wildlife and their habitat by being able to study trees and woody areas at their schools. It has also been proven that trees around hospital grounds, even if only visible from windows have a positive effect on reducing patient recovery times.

It is therefore, vitally important that trees in these locations are safe and maintained to a high standard, as many students, teachers, parents, hospital staff, patients and visitors will interact or be around these trees on a daily basis.

As owners of trees, private or public institutions have the same duty of care and legal responsibilities as everyone else who owns or manages trees, i.e. ensuring they do all they can to offer a safe environment for people to be in and around their trees.

Trees so often get overlooked as potential causes of accidents and damage, but our commitment to this sector is uppermost and details of our management plans for schools and hospitals can be found HERE.

Commercial and Business Sites

Commercial sites, business parks, shopping centres and car parks ofthen feature trees as part of their landscape design.

These sites have high volumes of visitors and our survey and management programmes are designed to help owners/mangers of these sites to monitor and manage their trees responsibly and conform to their legal obligations.
